Typically comprising of below-ground basements used for car parking, mechanical rooms, services, storage, electrical rooms, commercial or other usage. They also include Cut & Cover Tunnels, UG Metro Station boxes or foundations.
Most commonly, a Type A barrier system using fully bonded membrane systems based on guidelines of IS 16471: 2017 is recommended, often with additional protection measures using a combination of Type B integral crystalline waterproofing admixture for structural protection and/or with Type C drainage systems.
Since these structures are buried and not easily accessible post construction, the waterproofing system for UG structures needs to be well thought, properly designed with optimal specifications.

Integral Crystalline Admixture

Integral Crystalline admixture
- A special type of concrete admixture that enhances the waterproofing properties of concrete by reducing permeability in conformity to guidelines prescribed in ACI 212.3R-10.
- A powder added during concrete batching or in wet concrete, which is then mixed properly, forming crystals within the concrete which block pores by creating a waterproof barrier.
- Commonly used in basements, tunnels, and water treatment facilities, providing a permanent solution without additional materials by reducing permeability even under extreme hydrostatic pressure.
- Recommended to use integral crystalline admixtures for enhancing concrete durability which provides Type B protection as per IS16471:2017 in combination with Type A barrier systems.
